County Urges Preparedness for Eclipse

The total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 will arc across the United States from Oregon all the way to the southeastern coast of South Carolina. This is the first total solar eclipse in 38 years to cross the continental US and is expected to attract many spectators.

A total eclipse occurs as the moon passes in front of the sun. For about a two and a half hour time frame on the morning of August 21, daytime will gradually yield to dusk and then to darkness. During any one eclipse, totality occurs at best only in a narrow track on the surface of Earth. This narrow track will pass directly through Baker County.

Union County is expected to have many visitors traveling through in the days before and after the eclipse. Local officials urge county residents to be prepared. If you are planning to travel, expect delays. Make sure you have a full tank of gas and basic supplies in the vehicle such as food and water in case you’re stuck in traffic. You may experience longer lines, larger crowds and lengthier wait times at businesses you frequent. Plan to do your grocery shopping several days prior to the eclipse so you’re stocked up. By shopping early for food, prescription medications, water and fuel, you’ll be ready and the local stores can restock for visitors.
