Union County livestock producers are invited to apply for grant funding to assist in implementing nonlethal measures designed to prevent wolf depredation and to reduce conflicts between wolves and livestock.

Applications must be received by 5 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2026, to be considered for funding.

The Union County Wolf Depredation Compensation Advisory Committee administers the local program, which was established in 2012 under the direction of the Oregon Department of Agriculture. Funding is provided through the Oregon State Wolf Management Compensation and Proactive Trust Fund.

Since the state fund was established, the local committee has awarded grants to livestock producers for a variety of proactive prevention strategies, including fencing, night pens, lighting, range riders, additional herders, livestock guardian dogs and air patrols.

 Producers interested in applying or learning more about available funding are encouraged to reach out for assistance. Applications are available through the link below. For questions or assistance with the application process, contact Annette Powers at (541) 963-1001.

Union County’s Regulated Use Fire Season ends today, October 15. Residents may burn when weather conditions are suitable and burning is allowed for the day.

Before burning, residents must:

  • Obtain a copy of the 2024-02 Union County Burn Ordinance which serves as a burn permit. The ordinance is available on the Smoke Line webpage.

  • Call the burn line at 541-963-4040 or visit the Smoke Line webpage on the day they intend to burn to confirm whether burning is allowed.

Burn barrels, fire rings, other burning appliances, and open burning are permitted as long as all requirements of the ordinance are followed.

Burning certain materials, including plastics, tires, household garbage, and food waste is prohibited. Burning any material that produces dense black smoke or offensive odors is also prohibited. Residents are responsible for reviewing and following all requirements outlined in the ordinance.

Please use caution and burn responsibly. Never leave a fire unattended, keep water and tools nearby, and ensure the fire is completely extinguished before leaving it.

For burning information, call 541-963-4040. Burning remains subject to daily conditions and all requirements of the 2024-02 Union County Burn Ordinance.
